What Text Compare reads

Text Compare compares two texts, highlights their differences and lets you transfer selected changes or export a result. This policy describes the input used for that task, saved preferences, the welcome-page counter and the feedback pages the extension links.

Comparison input and output

The workspace reads text you type, paste or select from a file, together with the file name. It uses that input to calculate differences, display the two versions and prepare copied text, patches, HTML reports and browser printing. The open workspace keeps the current text pair, its comparison and a limited undo history in memory. Reloading or closing that workspace ends this session.

Copy actions place the selected result on the clipboard. Save actions create a file through the browser. Clipboard entries, saved files and print output have their own lifetime under your browser, operating system and chosen destination.

Saved preferences

The extension uses Chrome extension storage for two records:

textCompare.v1 contains a schema version and seven preferences: line wrapping, strict comparison, ignoring trailing whitespace, hiding unchanged lines, live comparison, the side-by-side or unified view, and word or character highlighting. The current schema version is 2; the storage key retains its original name.
textCompareRatePrompt contains recent prompt-display timestamps, an optional dismissal timestamp and an optional response category, either feedback or reviews. These values control when the rating prompt appears again.

Changing a preference updates its saved value. A rating response or dismissal remains recorded to control future prompts. Removing the extension removes its extension-storage records.

Welcome-page counter

Chrome opens the packaged welcome page after installation. Loading that page includes one image request to the publisher's analytics counter, using a fixed page address identifying the Text Compare welcome page. The purpose is to measure welcome-page views. Reopening the welcome page can load the image again.

The analytics service receives the network request, including the requesting IP address, browser request headers and request time. Cookies may be sent or set depending on browser settings and the service response. The image starts loading with the page; the extension does not present a consent choice before this request. Closing the page afterwards does not cancel a request already sent.

The hosted goodbye and rating pages carry the same analytics counter, used to count installs and removals by country.

Ratings, feedback and removal

The rating prompt appears after successful comparisons according to its saved state. Selecting one, two or three stars opens a feedback page on the publisher's site, with the chosen star count and the interface language in the page address. Selecting four or five stars opens the extension's Chrome Web Store reviews page when its store address is configured. Until that address is configured, the prompt displays an availability message.

The hosted feedback and removal pages collect responses submitted on those pages. The rating page receives the chosen star count and interface language in its address; the removal page receives the extension version and interface language. Submitted comments are delivered to the publisher through the feedback engine's Telegram bot.

Retention and requests

Workspace session: the current texts, comparison and undo history last until the workspace is reloaded or closed.
Preferences and prompt record: these persist between sessions until updated or the extension is removed.
Saved output: manage copies, downloaded reports and printed output at the destinations you selected.
Analytics and feedback: these involve the analytics service and the feedback delivery on the publisher's site. Removing the extension does not delete records already held by those parties.
